C. M. Eppes Recreation Center

GREENVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA

The C.M. Eppes Alumni Heritage Society calls Greenville, NC home. As a part of the renovations to the Eppes Recreation Center, the lobby now serves as the entrance to the Eppes Cultural Heritage Center. The Alumni group was formed to preserve the legacy of Greenville-Industrial which later became Charles Montgomery Eppes High School, a historically Black and segregated school.

Design Dimension worked closely with Beth Nevarez, a local exhibit researcher, and the alumni group to compile and share stories around the origins of the school and its community of principals, teachers, students, and parents. This opportunity to place historical exhibits in the entry of a vibrant community hub allowed our team to explore ways to mix in memories, first hand accounts, and the hardships through Jim Crow and segregation. Through yearbook imagery, quotes, vinyl graphics, and scrapbook style murals we incorporated these stories that kept reflecting back on the strength of community. The alumni group still continues to support the local community through scholarships and outreach programs –  expanding its impact and legacy in Greenville. 

The exterior entrance was activated with 10’ tall perforated metal fins with illustrations of community activities through the years – a closer look at the logos and uniforms provide hints and nods to the past.
